Pass Protection
Pass protection is essential for success in the passing game. Three stats measure your pass protection effectiveness:
Base Pass ProtectionsThere are two base pass-protection schemes:
1st number (8 or 9) indicates Drop-Back or Quick Game.
2nd number tells the F which side to line up on:

Play-Action Pass Protections
There are three ways to call play-action plays:
1. Using PAR & PAL
Example: Ace PAR Squeeze
Fake the 4 then throw the Squeeze
2. Calling a Run & Pass Together
Example: Orange 26 Squeeze
Fake the 26 then throw the Squeeze
3. Tagging a Run with a Protection Call
Example: Orange 34 – 90 Quake
Fake the 34 then throw the Quake
Pre-Snap Communication
Before every snap the OL will communicate 3 things:

- Total Sacks
- Sacks per Quarter
- Sacks per Game
Base Pass ProtectionsThere are two base pass-protection schemes:
- Drop-Back: 80/81
- Quick Game: 90/91
1st number (8 or 9) indicates Drop-Back or Quick Game.
2nd number tells the F which side to line up on:
- Odd (1) – F is on the Left
- Even (0) – F is on the Right
Generally:
- The F will have a dual read on the 2 LBs on his side.
- The OL will slide away from the F and be responsible for the Defensive Linemen (“Downs”) & the Mike LB
Play-Action Pass Protections
There are three ways to call play-action plays:
1. Using PAR & PAL
- “PA” stands for Play Action.
- “R / L” stands for Right (4) or Left (5)

- Defensive Structure: Verbalize
- Mike Linebacker: Point at Mike LB & Verbalize
- Any Blocking Calls & Adjustments:
- Pass Combo Calls
- “Me/You” – Guard communicating with Center
- “Out/Pick Up/Peel” – Picking up stunts
