Pass Protection

Pass Protection
Pass protection is essential for success in the passing game. Three stats measure your pass protection effectiveness:
  • Total Sacks
  • Sacks per Quarter
  • Sacks per Game

Base Pass ProtectionsThere are two base pass-protection schemes:
  • Drop-Back: 80/81
  • Quick Game: 90/91

1st number (8 or 9) indicates Drop-Back or Quick Game.
2nd number tells the F which side to line up on:
  • Odd (1) – F is on the Left
  • Even (0) – F is on the Right

Generally:
  • The F will have a dual read on the 2 LBs on his side.
  • The OL will slide away from the F and be responsible for the Defensive Linemen (“Downs”) & the Mike LB

Play-Action Pass Protections
There are three ways to call play-action plays:

1. Using PAR & PAL
  • “PA” stands for Play Action.
  • “R / L” stands for Right (4) or Left (5)

Example: Ace PAR Squeeze
Fake the 4 then throw the Squeeze

2. Calling a Run & Pass Together
Example: Orange 26 Squeeze
Fake the 26 then throw the Squeeze

3. Tagging a Run with a Protection Call
Example: Orange 34 – 90 Quake
Fake the 34 then throw the Quake

Pre-Snap Communication
Before every snap the OL will communicate 3 things:
  • Defensive Structure: Verbalize
  • Mike Linebacker: Point at Mike LB & Verbalize
  • Any Blocking Calls & Adjustments:
    • Pass Combo Calls
    • “Me/You” – Guard communicating with Center
    • “Out/Pick Up/Peel” – Picking up stunts
