Practice Fundamentals
At Calloway Football we teach the up-tempo no huddle system. This style of football has been extremely productive and widely successful at every level. Programs like Oregon, Clemson, Texas AM and hundred of high schools and youth programs are having a tremendous amount of success with this style of football.
Practice is the #1 Key to your success with this system.
The best advice we can give to coaches looking to implement the up-tempo no huddle is to trust it, stick to it, and follow the system from A-Z. It alls starts and ends with how you practice.
It’s important for your program to come up with your own identity. Our identity is to Play Fast, Compete, and Be Physical. We filter every thing we do through this view or we do not do it. The brand of football I want for my program is that we are going to line up and snap the ball at a feverish rate, compete on ever snap and be physical. I want the opposing coaches to concern themselves more with my tempo than my schemes. By doing this, I have an advantage before I even snap the ball. We have proven that tempo levels the playing field and gives us the advantage when we have a under-talented team playing more gifted athletes.

Here are some more of our practice fundamentals:
- Coaching Matters: We will be the best practice coaches in the league, region, and state.
- Energy & Excitement: Bring a high level of energy & excitement to everything we do.
- Coach Every Single Rep: FAST, using cue words & gestures. Focus is on reps & immediate, quick feedback. Do not slow down or stop practice for one player.
- The Fastest Way Off The Field: Is to be a “Me” guy. The 2nd fastest way is to slow us down!
- 100+ Team Reps per Practice: In a 2-hour practice, our players get as much actual practice time as other teams’ players get in an entire week.
- Constantly Self-Scout: Outside of practice, we analyze practice & player performance with video. One of our favorite sayings is: The eye in the sky don’t lie.
- Practice Like a Game: In tempo sessions, we use a timer, ball spotter, scout team, etc. to simulate game day conditions.
- Always Plan Practices: Every minute of every practice is planned with defined goals & clearly communicated. Not one minute is wasted.
- No Stupid Drills: If a player won’t perform an action in a game, we don’t waste time on it. For example, two players lying on their backs head-to-head and jumping up to make a tackle. You will never see a RB laying on his back jump up & run the ball straight at a defender during a game. Don’t waste time practicing it.
- Practice Fast: Our practices are always run at a high tempo.
- Practice All Situations: Always be prepared for any situation: (Like Down & Distance, Late Game, Goal Line, Substitutions, 4th & Short, Quick Change & Turn Overs...etc)
- Practice Hand Signals: Coaches need practice too. We don’t wait until game time to use hand signals.
- Always Be Conditioning: We condition with how we practice. There’s zero need to waste time running sprints if you make players do everything full-speed during practice.
- Coach Every Rep & Every Player: We use video outside of practice to evaluate every rep and every player so that everyone is prepared.
- #1 Rule, Never Stop Practice: We never stop a practice to coach a single player. It takes time away from other players getting reps and wastes valuable practice time.
- No Standing Around: Drill lines are always very short so that players are constantly moving. We want them getting reps every 10 – 20 seconds. Shorter lines = more reps.
- Coach Individual Players: During drills, designate coaches for pulling players aside when they need individual coaching. Don’t stop the drill to coach a single player.
- Every Practice Starts With: Noose, Pat-N-Go, & the Tackling Circuit.
