Formations & Motions

Formations

Majority of the plays in the Calloway Football offense are run out of shotgun. Keep in mind we do make adjustments in areas based on situational circumstances, defensive alignments, and other play concepts.

Players alignment in our base formation is as follows:
Position Player
Alignment
Center
On the line of scrimmage
Offensive Line (OL)
2-3 foot splits. Toes aligned with the heels of the Center
Quarter Back (QB)
Heals at 5 yards from the line of scrimmage
RB (F)
Heels at 6 yards from the line of scrimmage
Outside WR (X & Z)
On the line of scrimmage at the top of the numbers
Inside WR (H & Y)
Toes 1 yard off of the line of scrimmage. On the hash marks or split between the OT and outside WR.
Precise alignment is essential. Make sure your players always line up exactly where they are supposed to be.

Base Formation Rules

In football, there are three basic rules that cover formations:
  1. At the snap, you must have at least 7 players on the line of scrimmage.
  2. Of the players on the line of scrimmage, only the outermost players on each side may catch a pass.
  3. The players not on the line of scrimmage must be at least one yard behind it to be eligible to catch a pass or go down field.

Formation Adjustments & Tags
  • Left - (Y Only)
  • In - (Moves tagged WR into the slot)
  • Wide - (All WR's are on top of the numbers)
  • Pistol - (F Only stacks the QB)
  • Under - (QB goes under center to take snap)

Motions

Motion calls allow you to move a player into a different position before the snap. Motions are signaled in by tagging the position followed by the motion (e.g. “F Rob,” “Y Orbit,” “H Wiggle”).
Players line up as normal, and the QB calls “me me me” to let the OL know he will be calling the snap count. When he’s ready, he signals for the player to go in motion (usually by hand motion or raising a foot) then calls for the snap when the player is in the correct position.

Unless otherwise noted, players in motion move at half speed until in position or the ball is snapped.

WR Motion Calls
Important note: At the snap, you must have at least 7 players on the line of scrimmage. If the receiver going in motion starts on the line, he must either reset on the line once he has motioned or another receiver must move up to the line of scrimmage and be set before the snap. Remember only one player can be in motion at the snap of the ball.
